114: The Next Generation in Voice Application Technology
12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
Abstract
If someone asked you whether you thought voice technology was mature enough 10 years ago to support mission critical applications, you probably would have chuckled and asked if the question was a serious one. Ask that same question now and most people will tell you that they seldom call any customer support line of any major corporation without having to navigate some kind of voice technology. With the advent of Bluetooth technology, nearly every computer controlled device can now talk to us or interpret our speech. Voice technology has become one of the fastest growing technologies being implemented in warehousing operations to improve productivity because of its hands-free operation. And honestly, it works pretty well from the standpoint of the voice interface itself, if not the applications behind it! Certainly well enough that the number of vendors selling voice enabled hardware is growing.
This seminar will discuss next generation wireless voice applications that leverages a multi-modal, client side interpreter approach along with user configurable dialogues to optionally enable your voice in RF applications (or use both) configurable to your specific dialogue design.
Takeaways
- The benefits of a client side interpreter that also maintains persistence with the host/server applications
- A configurable toolset that allows you to tailor voice and RF dialogues with warehouse users or create your own warehousing application dialogues or other applications

115: Optimizing Labor Schedules in a Dynamic Warehouse Environment
1:45 PM - 2:30 PM
Abstract
Today's DC or warehouse has quickly become a strategic operations center for today's demand-driven marketplace. After facilities' costs, labor is the second highest expense item in the supply chain. And so, most supply chain professionals looking to wring the most cost out of their operations focus on labor productivity and efficiency. Certainly, having the right skills sets, fast workers and efficient processes are critical. Yet, many warehouse and distribution professionals miss a labor management area where a simple optimization tone-up can yield big return: labor scheduling.
Scheduling the optimal distribution of people working in a warehouse is one task that computers can simply do better than people. Unfortunately, two-thirds of warehouses still schedule their labor manually. According to a 2007 survey by the UW E-Business Consortium, 60 percent of managers at facilities who schedule their labor manually are either "very dissatisfied" or "dissatisfied" with the results. Of those managers who use an automated system to schedule labor, 37 percent were still "very dissatisfied" or "dissatisfied" with the results. This data indicates that few companies have automated these processes and fewer still are satisfied with what they have.

- What is the sufficient staff for a variable projected workload (i.e. better controlling contract labor, overtime, downtime, etc)

When it comes to traditional Labor Management Systems, setting performance standards creates a ceiling that may limit future performance increases. Engineering labor standards requires labor studies, heavy investment in licenses and integration, best practices development costs and months of training and communication with staff. But once standards are set and met, how are further operational improvements achieved? And how do the standards keep up with the dynamic changes in warehouse environments?
Today, organizations are pushing labor to improve productivity and efficiency on a daily basis and meeting yesterday's standard is no longer enough. Unlike traditional WMS-based Labor Management Systems, emerging alternative solutions allow the utilization of full real-time operational data to provide 100% visibility, accuracy, work incentives and flexibility to adjust performance goals to achieve maximum labor productivity. This new generation of LMS not only tells you WHAT happened, it can show you exactly WHY it happened so performance can be continuously improved. Join us and learn how new solutions and operational tracking systems can provide 100% visibility, dynamic real-time data and the ability to create labor incentive programs that keep growing and improving with you.

- Understand why 100% operational performance data is essential to your ability to control, manage and improve your labor costs

212: Modular Supply Chain Solutions: Dynamic Process Control
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
Abstract
In the current economic climate, and as a good business practice in general, most companies try to reduce future systems investment costs by better leveraging past investments. Some companies have invested in supply chain software solutions with which they are generally satisfied except for advanced or new core features only available by upgrade to entirely new releases from their current vendor or by replacement from a new vendor. The few Software as a Service (SAAS) supply chain applications currently available may be an option for companies who want to replace or buy their first system and require limited capabilities.
But what about companies who simply want to augment what they already have? What if they need more advanced capabilities for managing their distribution operations? What about smaller companies looking to introduce functionality in limited areas of their operation as needed? Are there options for users of older "green screen" solutions to upgrade to modern graphical interface (GUI) point solutions without resorting to screen scraping their current application? Do you need to sacrifice long term strategy for short term gains? This seminar will discuss modular solutions that address the need to augment existing systems with modern GUI applications.
Takeaways
- A review of modular solutions for improving outbound order flow called Dynamic Process Control (DPC) will be reviewed
- The importance of using GUIs in supply chain software that makes training and daily warehouse operations more productive

232: Creating Value By Increasing Productivity
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
Abstract
If you’re running a distribution or fulfillment center, you have interest in minimizing your operating expenses. Typically, labor costs will be one of your highest, if not the highest, expense line item, and it will be in your best interest to manage labor costs closely. “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” It’s an old management maxim that’s true today.
Through this seminar we will introduce methods for measuring and managing labor. A disinterested third party perspective on developing labor standards is often the best balance between associates and management. The goal for everyone should be a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. In the presentation, we will use a hypothetical project situation. You will be the distribution center manager challenged by the VP of Logistics. Your objective will be to reduce labor costs by 10% - 15%. We will consider your alternatives, discuss how to achieve your objective through a productivity tracking program, and review your potential results.
Takeaways
- How to establish productivity goals and report performance toward those goals
- How to use labor productivity reporting to reduce operating expenses

324: Network Wide Visibility: Improving Operational Excellence Within the 4-walls
12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
Abstract
Global sourcing, constricting economic conditions, supply chain outsourcing and advanced supply chain practices...each of these challenges increases risk in the supply chain and adds uncertainty around the flow of goods. Companies without insight into the real-time dynamics of their supply chain quickly loose operational effectiveness, which ultimately drives up costs and risks damaging customer loyalty. By combining real-time visibility and trading partner collaboration with extended execution, organizations have dramatically improved the effectiveness of their own internal operations and ensured that goods flow seamlessly and on-time to customers.
This session will focus on clarifying how successful visibility projects can reap measurable business benefits. We’ll also share some of the barriers to obtaining true network-wide visibility organizations face.
Takeaways
- Understanding of key business processes augmented by holistic supply chain visibility
- Key pitfall and challenges which must be avoided in order to achieve a successful visibility project and lessons learned
